Vehicles do not operate in identical environments everywhere. A vehicle travelling through a cool European climate may experience very different operating conditions from one travelling through a hot African city, rural road or mining environment.
Across many African markets, vehicles may operate under combinations of high temperatures, congested traffic, rough roads, heavy loads, long operating hours and diverse vehicle ages.
Urban traffic can be particularly demanding. Vehicles may spend long periods idling or moving slowly, followed by repeated acceleration. Commercial vehicles may also operate for extended periods each day, while trucks and heavy equipment can carry substantial loads.
Road conditions can introduce another variable. Poor or unpaved roads increase rolling resistance and can place additional demands on engines and drivetrains. Fuel supply chains can also vary between markets — differences in fuel quality, storage, handling and distribution can influence the condition of fuel reaching the vehicle.
None of these factors alone explains fuel consumption. However, their combination can create a challenging operating environment. This is why Africa needs context-specific approaches to mobility and fuel efficiency rather than simply importing assumptions from other operating environments.
